XX returned to the theme of bathers many times. Dispensing with traditional concepts of anatomy, the artist uses colour to express the form of what he paints. Here the landscape and figures assumes equal importance in the picture, the triangular composition of the group is echoed in the trees and everything is painted in brillant tones of blue and green. In "formulating" nature in this way XX prepared the way for Cubism and later developments in 20th-century painting.
In February 1888 YY went to live at Arles in Provance, where for a time he was joined by Gaugin. It was during those months in Arles that he painted several pictures of sunflowers.
ZZ, like Manet, enjoyed painting scenes of contemporary Parisian life. He was a superb draughtsman, which, coupled with his interest in photography, enabled him often to depict his models in unusual poses.
Influenced by Rubens, Veronese and Constable, WW was the leading painter of the Romantic movement in France.
